Twelve (12) cities were identified as billionaire Cities of Mindanao based on total current operating income as 2018 fiscal data was released by Department of Finance. These cities are Davao, Zamboanga, General Santos, Cagayan de Oro, Iligan and Butuan which are all Highly-Urbanized Cities (HUCs) in Mindanao. This was followed by Tagum, Malaybalay, Valencia, Digos, Pagadian, and Mati.

Twelve (12) cities were identified as billionaire Cities of Mindanao based on total current operating income as 2018 fiscal data was released by Department of Finance. These cities are Davao, Zamboanga, General Santos, Cagayan de Oro, Iligan and Butuan which are all Highly-Urbanized Cities (HUCs) in Mindanao. This was followed by Tagum, Malaybalay, Valencia, Digos and Mati.

It can be noted that Davao region has the most number of billionaire cities which has 5 among the list which is then followed Northern Mindanao Region which has 4 cities in the list.

Based on the data released, seven cities can also identified as billionaire cities in the next 1-2 years which are the following: Bayugan City (P976.98 million), Cotabato City (P974.80 million), Gingoog City (P941.34million), Koronadal City (P921 million), Dipolog City (P899.38 million), Kidapawan City(P895.25 million) and Surigao City (P825.77 million).

Digos, Panabo, and Mati cities were newbies in the list at the total operating income of these cities finally stepped in the 1-billion mark.

DIGOS CITY

Known for its sweet-juicy 'carabao variety mango' which sold locally and exported abroad, Digos City lies on the western shores of the Davao Gulf and southern foothills of Mount Apo, centrally located between two big cities, Davao and General Santos.

Agriculture is a major component of Digos City economy. The more important agricultural crops grown in the area include coconut, sugarcane, mango and banana. Among the agricultural crops, the staple crops rice and corn are the most widely grown.

PANABO CITY

Originated from the phrase "pana-sa-boboy" which means "bow and arrow" and being known as the "Banana Capital of the Philippines", Panabo City reached P1.065 billion in terms of operating income last 2018. Numerous banana plantations scattered throughout the city. In fact, Panabo is the home of the world's biggest banana plantation, which is owned by the Tagum Agricultural Development Company (TADECO), which covers around 6,900 hectares of banana fields and produce millions of boxes of export-quality bananas annually.

MATI CITY

Offering beautiful landscapes and a number of beautiful resorts, Mati is one of the newbies in the billionaire list as it made more than P1-billion in operating income on 2018. Tourism is a rapidly growing business in the city. Mining is also a contributor to the city's economy, due to the large deposits of copper in the city outskirts.

Total operating income includes t Locally-Sourced Income (LSI) + Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA).
